Germany
Julian Haart’s first vintage was under his own label in 2010, after apprenticing with some of Germany’s top producers, and he quickly showed himself to be a serious winemaker. His first vineyard purchase was a small parcel, only about 0.8 hectares, in the grand cru site Ohligsberg, just downstream from his hometown of Piesport. In 2011, he expanded the estate with the grand cru sites of Goldtröpfchen and Schubertslay, both in Piesport. The sites are among the Mosel’s finest, requiring intensive vineyard work.
The estate is now around five hectares, and this is about the size that Julian wants it to be. Most of the work is done by him and his wife, Nadine, and by hand as most of the vineyards are steep and terraced, making them challenging to even walk through.
“1000L” was initially made from one Fuder, the traditional 1,000-liter barrel of the Mosel, hence the wine’s name, though for subsequent years, the number of Fuders has varied. This is legally Trocken and sourced from 25-year-old vines in the Grand Cru Goldtröpfchen vineyard. The wine shows notes of fresh lime, green apple, honeydew, apricot, and beeswax, with high acidity on the palate that balances the fruity sweetness (11.5% ABV).
Try it with mild cheeses, spicy dishes, Thai and Indian cuisine, or a range of meat or vegetable dumplings. A great wine to enjoy now and to age over the next decade as well.
